In this blog post, I will share my expertise on how to create a blog as a full-time digital nomad. I will go over crucial steps with you like what web hosting platform to choose and how to select your blog’s niche and name, among other steps to get you started on your path to as a professional or hobby blogger.

Steps To Take Before Creating Your Travel Blog Website
Before diving right in, you’ll need to take a step back and come up with a plan. Just like every author to every New York Times Bestseller, you need an outline. What’s your blog going to be about? Who is your target audience? Are you writing to earn an income or for fun? If you want this to be a business, then you need to treat it as one right from the get-go.
Pick a Niche
If you stick to one topic, those that come around to read a single post are likely to come back to read more. A blog niche is a category you’ll write your content about on your blog.
Common blogging niche’s:
- Health and Fitness
One way to set yourself apart is to niche down within your niche. If you want to start a travel blog, I’m the first one to tell you to go for it! But, narrow it down even further.
For example, one way you could do this is to write about a specific brand of luggage. Since most travel bloggers talk about a variety of topics, they aren’t going to be an expert like you are when it comes to that specific brand of luggage, which means that whatever reader comes to your blog when looking for information on that brand they’re likely to keep coming back for more.
When setting goals for your blog, make them as specific as you possibly can. One suggestion I have is to set yearly as well as monthly goals.
How much traffic do you want to bring in your first month?
How much money do you want to make in your first month?
How often are you going to publish blog articles every month?
Once you set your first month’s goal, then set your yearly, or vice-versa.
Decide What Platforms to Promote Your Blog on
After hours of researching and writing, it’s time for you to finally post your content. But where are you going to promote it?
Popular blog promotion options to consider:
- Share on social media accounts
- Reach out to influencers
- Guest post
- Answer questions on Quora or Reddit
One of the biggest mistakes I made when first starting my blog was trying to promote across too many platforms instead of focusing on one or two at a time. I would suggest focusing on writing high-quality content with a solid SEO strategy and Pinterest for your first 6 months. After 6 months, expand to different platforms.
How To Create A Blog
Create Domain Name
A website domain is the name of your website. For example, it’s the portion of a web address that comes after www. Or after the @ sign in an email address.
Why is a domain important? Think about it this way: When you’re strolling through a Barnes and Noble with your $10 double chai frappe-doodle coffee, what’s the first thing you notice when you see a book? It’s usually the title that makes the first impression. The same thing goes for your website domain. It’s the first impression your readers will have of your website and has the potential to get them intrigued before even reading any content.
When creating your domain name, less is more. Try to come up with something shorter and catchy to make it easier for your readers to remember. My domain name is thenomadicscribbler and I often regret adding the word “the” in the beginning and wish I made it shorter. You live and you learn, though!

I know you’re thinking to yourself: But I thought I purchased a subscription for Bluehost to create my website.
Let me better explain: Bluehost is a company that hosts various content management systems (CMS), and that includes including WordPress.org. WordPress.com is a website builder that hosts your WordPress site on its servers.

Select A Travel Blog Theme
When selecting a WordPress theme for your travel blog, you can either create it from scratch or purchase a theme to expedite the process. I chose the latter because I do not know how to code a website and wanted to save my time for things that mattered more to me, like writing.
You can select a free theme from the WordPress website. Otherwise, I suggest purchasing a theme that you can digitally download from Etsy.

Once you have purchased your theme, save the file to your desktop and then head back to your WordPress Dashboard.
Up next, navigate to “My Sites” and click on “Log in to WordPress.”

Then click “Themes.”
Up next, click the “Install Theme” button.
Up next, click on the “Upload Theme” button and then the “Choose file” button.
Locate the .zip file for your website theme that you purchased from Etsy and saved to your desktop.
Click the “Install Now” button to install your Etsy blog design.
Lastly, click the “Activate” button and your blog theme is installed.
Install Plugins For Efficiency
Yoast SEO – Yoast SEO is one of the most popular WordPress plugins. The Yoast plugin’s main function will help you rank higher in Google’s search engine. Not only does this SEO platform provide you with keyword placement recommendations, but it also provides feedback and suggestions on your posts or website’s readability and site structure.
Monster Insights – The most popular Google Analytics plugin, Monster Insights, allows you to view how your website is doing without having to leave your WordPress dashboard.
Insights provided through this plugin include where and what sources your traffic is coming from, where your articles rank, page views, and outbound links, among others.
Pre-Write Your Content a Month In Advance
I suggest that you pre-write your monthly content and come up with a schedule for how often you want to post.
When I first launched my travel blog, I didn’t have any pre-written content, and to be honest, I had no idea what I was doing. Not writing ahead of schedule is a major regret of mine. It’s good to pre-write your blog posts, especially when you first launch because your users will have more of a reason to stick around and want to subscribe to your blog.

One of the most time-saving things I did for my blog was when I created WordPress templates. To do this, I created a vacation itinerary post and published it to my website. Anytime I write an itinerary blog post, I just go to that post and click “duplicate” and then just paste my blog article in the specific fields. Then I do the same for every type of blog post structure I want.

like I stated earlier in this post, having social media schedulers like Tailwind saves me so much time. I can sit down at my desk on a Sunday afternoon and create and schedule all of my Pin images for Pinterest in one setting.

Schedule Your Blog’s Launch Date
One of the last steps you want to take before launching your blog is scheduling the date so that you can promote it before launch! You can schedule your first month’s posts so that you don’t have to worry about publishing your articles at a specific time every single day.
To schedule a post, look at the “Document” tab in the right hand corner of your screen.
Under “Post” click on the date or the words “Immediately” that is highlighted in blue to the right of the “Publish” button.
This will open up a calendar where you can select the day and time you want your post published.
Once you select the date, the blue button that once said “Publish” will now say “Schedule“. Click the “Schedule” button and that’s all you have to do on your end!
